things to do when you’re bored… 05.05.’06
Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006Feeling really, really bored? Winda to the rescue. Here, I shared some tips to get rid of that bored.
- sleep
my absolute number one solution.
May not be very effective, but usually when you woke up, you’ll be too sleepy to remember that you were bored.
Excuse me? Oh, it’s too damn hot to even feel sleepy? And oh, it’s been too hot you don’t feel sleepy anymore?
Try tip #2
- call someone.
When I say ‘call someone’ you can do one of this following:
a) dial their number, really want to have a chat with them. Or,
b) give them a miscall or two
c) call them right until they pick up the phone, then hung up.
If you’re about to do (b) go ahead. Miscall anybody from a to z on your phone book. If you’re a (c) person, make sure that you hung up right after they pick up the phone cos that’s where the fun lies. But if you want to do (a), here’s some suggestion.
Pick someone or two one, any number, from your phonebook. But please do pick carefully. Because choosing a wrong person could lead you into a more boring condition than your previous state.
I would suggest you to pick those whom you knew always in a happy mood or rarely get upset becos they could bring some fresh air to chase away the boredom. Or those with whom you always had a great chat.
Another advice is for you to really know that happyperson. Becos if s/he happens to be in a bad mood that day, and got a similar bad-mood-attitude with my friends and I, which is to dump away every bad emotion s/he had to anybody who happens to be stupid/unlucky/brave/get the wrong draw/moronic enough to try to talk to them that very day, then, kiss your sanity goodbye, baby.
You can start the conversation by saying
a) “I’m bored, entertain me.” Or;
b) “Hey.. just called to say hi.”
Both depends on what mood you’re on, how bored you are, what kind of person is the chosen one, what is your relationship with her/him (If you’re not that close, maybe that would make her/him feel used becos you called them only when you’re bored. But if you’re close, then it’s okay, for you must have used each other before), and most importantly, what kind of person are you.
- have a strike
hop in to the nearest crowds gathering to demonstrate upon something. It would be tremendously interesting to see what those demonstrators are doing/capable to do in the heat of the demo.
A quick tips, aside from not forgetting to mingle, you also have to know the issue that they’re demonstrating upon. It won’t be funny if they found out that you know nothing, then accusing you of being a spy or worse, provocateur. Becos you could end up being punched, stoned, and burnt.
But since that won’t be boring (it hurts, yes. But boring? No.), I’d say the choice is in your hand.
- text someone
almost the same with no. 2, text someone that’s all golly. Pick someone you really know how they say things in order to make confusion. Becos as you might have know, text consist of words. And words, if not being used properly (i.e. correct tones, punctuation, sign), could mislead us. While in text, as you might have guess, the words are never used properly.
But of course, if you get upset upon things that your friend said in the text, or even for the thing that s/he didn’t say (for s/he doesn’t even reply your text) it’s also good. That way, you’re not feeling bored anymore. You feel upset.
This tips is recommended for those who
a) wont give away that you’re feeling bored
b) cant afford the credits for calling.
c) Not using simpati
d) The party you want to call is not using simpati/other telkomsel’s card.
e) The party you want to call is using simpati and as you. But you’re bored during the day, not the night.
- peel/skin/strip/unwrap something
peeled/skinned/stripped/unwrapped things maybe cant really bring you out from the boredom, but it at least could maximize the time that you’re using to ponder upon the very question of “why am I bored?” And as doing repetitive things could make your brain relaxed, it could make you focus, and of course, you’ll get something when you’re finished.
I would suggest you to use peanut. You can buy a 250gr of peanuts, or you can try for 1kg if you’ve been bored to the bone and back.
And if you feel a twinge in the fingers that you’re using to peel/skin/strip/unwrap the peanuts (which is, if you know the right way to peel/skin/strip/unwrap a peanut, would be the side of your index fingers) fear not. It’s completely okay. Pain is good sometimes. If you can feel the pain, then that means you’re no longer really bored, you’re no longer numb. You can start to feel something. Which is pain.
- eat
this might be a classical option. But it works. For some people.
Chose something with extreme taste/temperature. Like a frozen ice cream. Or a hot, very spicy soup. Or rujak with 20chillies. Or a much too salty soup.
You’ll get distracted on how freezing/hot your mouth is or how numb your tongue felt. And in the case of extreme hot/spicy, you’ll get distracted by worrying whether your head’s gonna explode or not.
- take a bath
hit the shower, indulge in the tub. Or if your bathroom’s like any other, ordinary Indonesian’s house, open the water tab, maximize it until the water that comes pouring is so loud you can’t even hear yourself.
Take whatever time you need to indulge yourself this particular tip. But of course, make sure that your entire family has used it (especially at morning) or you’ll get that pathetic ass of yours kicked out from the house right after you step out of the bathroom, so quick you cant even say ‘sorry’.
- counting sheep
yep, the same method some of you might use when you’re having one of those insomniac night. But it’s in a different level. Don’t just count the white sheep. Also count the black and the grey sheep. And also the sheep which has no wool. And how many bag of wool they made.
- sing along out loud
this can safely done especially when you’re all alone in your boarding house. Research said that when you’re releasing your voice loudly, your stress level will be decreased. What kind of research, you asked? I don’t know myself….
- making this list
listing things that could lift you out of boredom when you’re in fact bored is the last desperate thing you could do
Though not all of the tips have been tried by the author that don’t make them less effective. So, test your luck by trying one of tips above.
